It covers 22 countries, ranging from Russia to Turkey, including Greece, Cyprus, and the European Republics of the former USSR, sketching out their political, economic and foreign policy orientations, and providing a chronological account of the most significant events.. The introductory section focuses on the ten years since the fall of communism, described in a series of essays, which provide readers with some insights and interpretations of crucial events that marked the area's more recent history, in order to promote an understanding of the transition, no longer considered a specifically East European feature, but rather a process that involves the old continent as a whole. The special session, "After Kosovo, what Europe?" analyses the impact of this crisis on international relations, on Russia and on the region's internal developments, as well as international strategies for the stabilisation of the area. Stefano Bianchini is professor of History and Insitutions of Eastern Europe Countries at Bologna University and he is also director of the Institute for Eastern and Balkan Europe in Bologna. Marta Dassù is director of the Institute of International Politics Studies in Rome.
