Turkish influence in Africa: diplomacy, trade and security in relations between ankara and the continent. Opportunities and challenges for Italy?
In a time of international uncertainty and global shifting, fostering cooperation between middle powers like Italy and Türkiye is a tool for security and regional integration. Indeed, by pivoting on their longstanding complementarities, Rome and Ankara's interests overlap in many chess boards, including Africa and the Mediterranean as a whole. This research, jointly conducted by CeSPI and ASBU, examines Türkiye’s evolving role in Africa -particularly in the Sahel, Horn of Africa, and North Africa- while also analyzing Italy's strategy -notably through the Mattei Plan- alongside other regional and international actors. In addition to enriching scientific research on Türkiye’s role in Africa, the study aims to outline policy recommendations for joint Italian-Turkish engagement in and with the Continent.
