News EU: no decision yet on the reallocation of funds for the Western Balkans

20 July 2026

The European Commission has clarified that no decision has yet been taken on the possible redistribution of funds provided under the Western Balkans Growth Plan among the beneficiary countries. Brussels is currently assessing the progress made by each partner in implementing the agreed reforms and is reviewing the reports submitted by the governments of the region.

The Reform and Growth Facility is based on the principle of conditionality: the disbursement of funds depends on the achievement of the established reform objectives. The Commission stressed that, in the previous payment request, around 78% of the planned reforms had been completed, indicating significant progress.

Meanwhile, on 30 June 2026, the first grace period provided for under the regulation expired. Countries that had not met all the conditions after the first funding request were given an additional year to complete the required reforms. Only after assessing the results achieved will the Commission be able to decide whether to proceed with a possible reallocation of resources among the partner countries, as foreseen by the regulation.
