Securing democracy in the Western Balkans by strengthening the rule of law

In the new accession methodology launched by the European Union, the rule of law has a fundamental role in the overall core values of the Union. The countries of the Western Balkans, despite their efforts, are still struggling against phenomena such as organised crime, corruption, cronyism, the weakness of the judiciary and the lack of public confidence in the institutions. The poor health of the rule of law in the Balkans may have repercussions on the democratic consolidation of countries.

The article is part of the dossier issued by the Fundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) with the aim of providing an overview of the current state of the region in key areas such as the economy and the rule of law, with an eye on the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.
