News: USA, new ambassadors nominated for Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro

U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated new ambassadors for Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate. The nominations are Michael Young for Serbia, Ronald Johnson for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Peter McCoy for Montenegro.

Michael Young, a lawyer and expert in international law with a long career at the State Department and in academia, has been designated for Belgrade. Ronald Johnson, a former Marine Corps brigadier general with military and international experience, has been appointed for Sarajevo. Peter McCoy, a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and former federal prosecutor, has been chosen for Podgorica.

The nominations follow the U.S. constitutional procedure requiring Senate advice and consent. After review by the Foreign Relations Committee and a vote in the Senate, the candidates can be officially confirmed and assume their posts in the respective countries.

The confirmation process may take weeks or months and represents one of the main mechanisms of congressional oversight over U.S. foreign policy.
