News: Serbia’s decision to cancel EuroPride causes disappointment for the European Commission while questioning the role of Russia

7 September 2022

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, announced the intention to cancel the annual event of EuroPride - an annual event that is held every year in a different European capital and that this year should have been held in Belgrade from 12 to 18 September - due to the delicate situation in Kosovo.

The decision of Serbia was widely contested by the European Commission, which found the reasons for the annulment "unacceptable", pointing out that the event is fundamental to promote the rights of the LHBTI+ community throughout Europe.

Some political analysts believe that behind the choice of Serbia there is the influence of Russia and the Serbian Orthodox Church - historically close to the Kremlin - which expressed itself in describing the event as "completely contrary to the system of values" of the Serbian people.
