News: Serbia, What the students’ Memorandum on Kosovo contains

The “Memorandum on Kosovo and Metohija” published by the Serbian student movement has sparked controversy due to its nationalist language, reaffirming the position that Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia and referring to the Serbian Constitution, without however proposing concrete solutions to the issue. Criticism focuses mainly on the tone and rhetorical expressions used, which many observers consider excessively nationalist and potentially damaging to the movement’s international image.

The student movement, which originated as an anti-corruption and rule-of-law protest, has over time taken on a heterogeneous political structure, oscillating between civic pro-European positions and patriotic references used to broaden consensus, also in response to the Serbian government’s campaign, which has often accused protesters of treason and anti-Serbian sympathies. According to some analysts, the use of nationalist rhetoric does not necessarily represent an ideological shift, but may serve electoral purposes in a polarized political context, where the Kosovo issue remains highly sensitive and difficult to address in reformist terms without risking a loss of support.
