News: Serbia: Vucic announces early elections on 17 December

1 November 2023

After less than two years, the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, dissolved the National Assembly - elected on 3 April 2022 - announcing early elections for 17 December 2023.

The parliamentary elections will coincide with the local elections in Belgrade and the regional elections in Vojvodina.

According to experts, this move will allow Vucic to wade through a moment of strong destabilization for the country: protests and anti-government demonstrations have been taking place for months following the armed attack near in which 18 people lost their lives last May.

Moreover, the suspension of parliamentary work would allow Vucic to postpone the decision on Kosovo: the day before the announcement of Vucic, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visiting Belgrade, invited the local government to intensify its efforts to normalize relations with Kosovo, in order to get closer to the European Union.
