News: Serbia, Kos threatens to block EU funds

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has threatened to block €1.5 billion in EU funds allocated to Serbia if the country does not address three issues: “Judicial reform that undermines the independence of the judiciary, the repression of street protests, and recurring interference against independent media.”

The judicial reform approved by the Serbian Parliament in January 2026 aims to restructure the court system and modify the procedures for appointing judges and prosecutors. According to the opposition, the real goal of the reform is to strengthen government control over the judiciary, thereby reducing its independence.
