14 July 2022

The Stabilisation and Association Council concluded on 14 July in Podgorica. For the occasion, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Policy, Olivér Várhelyi, met with Prime Minister of Montenegro Dritan Abazović. At the end of the council, Borrell said that the current international scenario has made the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union a geopolitical imperative and warned of the ongoing political crisis in Montenegro that threatens to threaten the proper implementation of the reforms in the country.

On 8 July , the Montenegrin government announced the signing of an agreement regulating relations between the State and the Serb Orthodox Church, raising a wave of protests in the country and shaking support for the government of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS)
