News: Kosovo applied for candidate status

14 December 2022

Kosovo has submitted a formal application for the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union. The letter was signed by the President, Vjosa Osmani, the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, and the President of the National Assembly, Glauk Konjufca.

It will now be up to the European Commission to determine whether or not the country fulfils the necessary criteria to start accession negotiations.

In parallel, on Wednesday, representatives of the European Parliament, the Commission and the Council reached an agreement on visa liberalisation for Kosovo by 1 January 2024.

The new rules would allow Kosovo passport holders to travel to the EU without a visa for a period of 90 days.
