News :French proposal splits North Macedonia

5 July 2022

Following protests in the country against the French proposal for a compromise agreement between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, the Macedonian president, Stevo Pendarovski, convened the National Security Council to discuss the proposal. The French agreement is supported by the Albanian opposition party, Aliance for Albanians (ASH), led by Zijadin Sela and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who said that if North Macedonia does not accept the French agreement, Albania will seek to pursue the path of European integration on its own.

President of the European Council, Charles Michel, went to Skopje on 5 July to convince the government to accept the proposal that could accelerate the negotiations of accession to the European Union of the country.
