News: ECFR poll: Europeans open to Ukraine’s accession but reluctant to the Western Balkans

16 January 2024

According to the new survey conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), Europeans are in favour of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, despite the possible risks in terms of economy and security. However, there is a widespread rejection of Turkey’s accession and a certain reluctance with regard to the countries of the Western Balkans, together with Georgia and Moldova. According to the survey, the "old" Member States, such as Austria, Denmark, Germany and France, are more reluctant to accept new members, while the more recent Member States, such as Romania and Poland, are more favourable.
