News: Bosnia and Herzegovina: A New Agreement Signed with Frontex to Strengthen Border Management

11 June 2025

The European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina have signed a new status agreement between Frontex (the European Border and Coast Guard Agency) and Bosnian authorities, aimed at enhancing cooperation on migration and border management. The agreement is part of the EU Action Plan for the Western Balkans, launched in December 2022, and will allow Frontex to deploy its units along the country’s borders.

Currently, Frontex employs around 500 officers in the Western Balkans, having signed similar agreements with North Macedonia in October 2022, Montenegro in May 2023, Albania in September 2023, and Serbia in June 2024.

According to the European Commission, the first four months of 2025 saw a 58% decrease in irregular border crossings along the Balkan route.
