News: Bosnia and Herzegovina, High Representative Schmidt announces his resignation

21 May 2026

The High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, has announced his intention to step down from office for personal reasons. Schmidt reportedly requested the launch of the process to select his successor, while stating that he intends to remain in office until a new High Representative is appointed.

Schmidt’s nearly five-year mandate at the head of the OHR (Office of the High Representative) was marked by strong political tensions, controversial interventions, and open clashes with Republika Srpska leader Milorad Dodik. Concerns are now emerging over a potential phase of instability and possible secessionist pressures that could follow his resignation.
