Every day of protest in Serbia is a blow to the European Union’s credibility

As student-led pro-democracy protests continue to shake Serbia and trust in Brussels steadily erodes, the European Union finds itself trapped between its democratic principles and its industrial and environmental strategy.
The ongoing unrest highlights the growing disconnect between the EU’s rhetoric on democratic values and its pragmatic tolerance of illiberal tendencies in key partner countries of the Western Balkans.
