Drina choked by waste: lack of political will stalls Bosnia

Seasonal rains carry waste from illegal landfills into the Drina River, where it accumulates against the barrier of a hydroelectric plant. The waste originates from illegal dumps upstream in Bosnia, as well as from neighboring Serbia and Montenegro. Representatives from all three countries have pledged to cooperate in addressing the problem. In 2019, a meeting of the Environment Ministers of Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro was held on-site, but years later, no solution seems forthcoming.
