Are the Balkans dying?

2 December 2022

For decades now, the Western Balkans have been experiencing a steady demographic decline. This phenomenon is not only attributable to the decline in births, but above all to the emigration that is taking on alarming proportions. According to the UN report, Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks second in the world in terms of the number of citizens abroad (34%), immediately followed by Albania (30%). The most sought-after destination is Germany, which, in constant need of labour, finds in the countries of the Western Balkans an almost inexhaustible pool of labour.
