Serbia & The Student Movement: Towards A Political Turning Point?

4 May 2026

The webinar held on 30 April explored the political situation in Serbia following the student protests triggered by the 2024 Novi Sad train station disaster. The discussion focused on the growing demands for democracy, transparency and accountability directed at the Serbian government, in a context marked by reports of repression, corruption and electoral irregularities.

Particular attention was given to Serbia’s relationship with the European Union, balancing the government’s European ambitions with increasing EU concerns over the deterioration of the rule of law in the country. The webinar also addressed the prospects for the upcoming national elections and the role that European institutions and civil society can play in supporting the student movement and democratic values in Serbia.

The webinar was organized by CeSPI together with European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity and Foundation Max van der Stoel.

The speaker was Dinko Gruhonjić, associate professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad.
