News: The European Commission has established the new Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood

The European Commission has reorganized the DG NEAR, responsible for the Neighbourhood and Enlargement, by establishing two separate new Directorates-General. The Directorate-General for the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf (DG MENA), led by the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, and the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST), responsible for the accession negotiations with candidate countries, led by Commissioner Marta Kos.
DG ENEST will manage most of the EU’s financial and technical assistance to candidate countries, as well as to Eastern Neighbourhood countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus. The DG will also provide support for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine.
